On the Semantics of Linking and Importing in Modular Ontologies

چکیده
Modular ontology languages, such as Distributed Description Logics (DDL), E-connections and Package-based Description Logics (P-DL) offer two broad classes of approaches to connect multiple ontology modules: the use of mappings or linkings between ontology modules e.g., DDL and E-connections; and the use of importing e.g., P-DL. The major difference between the two approaches is on the usage of “foreign terms” at the syntactic level, and on the local model disjointness at the semantic level. We compare the semantics of linking in DDL and E-connections, and importing in P-DL within the Distributed First Order Logics (DFOL) framework. Our investigation shows that the domain disjointness assumption adopted by the linking approach leads to several semantic difficulties. We explore the possibility of avoiding some of these difficulties using the importing approach to linking ontology modules.

Adapt OWL as a Modular Ontology Language
OWL, the most commonly used web ontology language, has limited provision for handling modular ontologies. Specifically, the owl:imports construct for linking ontology modules lacks support for partial reuse of or localized semantics for the linked ontology modules. We propose an alternative to owl:imports, namely, semantic importing, for linking multiple modular ontologies with support for loca...
متن کاملA Semantic Importing Approach to Knowledge Reuse from Multiple Ontologies
We present the syntax and semantics of a modular ontology language SHOIQP to support context-specific reuse of knowledge from multiple ontologies. A SHOIQP ontology consists of multiple ontology modules (each of which can be viewed as a SHOIQ ontology) and concept, role and nominal names can be shared by “importing” relations among modules. SHOIQP supports contextualized interpretation, i.e., i...
متن کاملPackage-Based Description Logics - Preliminary Results
Many representative applications on the semantic web, including collabora-tive ontology building, partial ontology reuse, selective knowledge hiding and distributed data management, call for modular ontologies,. However, although OWL allows using owl:imports to connect multiple ontologies, its current semantics requires all involved ontologies to have a single global semantics, thus providing o...
متن کاملA Semantic Importing Approach to Reusing Knowledge from Multiple Autonomous Ontology Modules
Semantic web aims to provide seamless access to a large number of inter-connected, autonomous resources. Hence, it is inevitable that ontologies on the semantic web are distributed and context-specific. There is an urgent need for ontology languages and reasoning services that allow knowledge from multiple ontologies to be combined and reused from specific points of view. We present the syntax ...
متن کاملOWL/ZIP: Distributing Large and Modular Ontologies
Ontologies published on the web can be quite large, from a couple of megabytes to more than a gigabyte. Deploying, importing and using such ontologies can be a problem, both in terms of bandwidth and load time over the web, and in terms of physically storing them. Some ontologies in BioPortal for example are shipped in their compressed form (via their web services), which allows filesize reduct...
